Everyone knows about the number one on the list.
1. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh
You know, that man who was sentenced to twenty years in prison for raping two devotees at the Dera Sacha Sauda ashram. More than the hypocrisy of the self-proclaimed godmen and godpeople, it showed us how wonderfully entrenched in rape culture we are, as a country. When this rapist was found guilty by the court, lakhs of people assembled and turned violent. It killed around 40 people. So much for women’s rights of a country. But is this the only person who has abused his power for sexual exploitation of devotees? Oh no. This is India where the godpeople can be compared to the Catholic priests who mistook their profession as being child sexual abuse. Here are 6 other godpeople who thought sexual abuse is gawd’s gift.
2. Sathya Sai Baba
No, being dead does not erase the crimes a person committed while alive. Sathya Sai Baba was a godman of humongous following, who performed magic tricks and expected people to believe them. Well, people did believe them and kept supporting him. But the allegations of child sexual abuse that surfaced would make anyone puke. He was a CSA monster and had sexually abused many children. Allegations included incidents where he had rubbed oil on children’s testicles and asked them to perform oral sex for him.
Do you know that the British Government once discussed in their parliament the danger a visit to Sai Baba would pose to male children? US government warned its citizens to stay away from him and UNESCO once refused to be part of a conference at his ashram due to allegations of sexual harassment. If he had sexually assaulted British or American children, he had assaulted Indian children also. No points for guessing why nobody complained. You can take a look at the crowd that gathered for rapist Ram Rahim if you want a hint.
3. Swami Nithyananda
This man thought himself to be very clever. When devotees joined his cult, according to this NewsMinute report, he made them sign certain contracts. These contracts said that the volunteers consented to the use of sexual energy and activities would involve nudity, close physical proximity . . . in short, rape. Women did not even know what the clauses were when they signed these contracts because like all devotees they trusted this man. Matters came to light when a former devotee filed a complaint of rape against this man. Do you know one of the nonsensical things he said in his defence in court? That he was like a child and was not capable of having sex. The court ordered a potency test but the real test should probably be done to his brain because it thinks that sex and rape are the same.
4. Asaram Bapu
In 2013, a young girl lodged a complaint of rape against Asaram Bapu. He had raped her saying that it was ‘treatment’ for her illness at his ashram in Jodhpur. That’s one of the favourite reasons of these creeps who pose to be agents of god. ‘Let’s cure you by raping you’. Turned out that she was not the only victim. Two sisters in Surat had also lodged complaints of rape against this man. One of them was against Asaram Bapu’s son Narayan Sai. Do people inherit rapist genes?
After he was arrested for rape, ‘mysterious’ murders of witnesses in the case started. Six witnesses have been murdered several have been attacked, one with acid.
5. Lal Bulchandani
This man who likes to call himself Lal Sai, was arrested for rape. He had a huge following in Madhya Pradesh till a girl lodged a complaint of rape against him. He was also accused of sexually abusing girls after giving them some medication as part of ‘meditation’. Wow, great feat there. That’s the thing you have to absolutely do to unsuspecting devotees. Cheat them and assault them. Where did you say you went to school?
6. Ichchadari Bheemanand
Haven’t you heard of this magic man who calls himself a shapeshifter? His name was Shiv Murat Dwivedi. He ran a sex racket and was arrested for it in 1997. Out on bail, he took the most obvious decision in India. Involved in a sex racket? Turn into a saint. So he did. He called himself Ichchadhari Sant Swami Bheemanand Ji Maharaj Chitrakoot Wale. [Why don’t these people ever name themselves in less number of syllables. Phew!] He was again arrested in 2010 for the same reason. Running a sex racket! Our courts sometimes act as bizarre as these criminals and they granted him bail yet again. Then in 2017 he was arrested for cheating a woman of 30 lakhs on promise of a job.
These are just some of the stories that were reported and some of the people who were arrested. India is a market where spiritualism sells and too many a**holes know it. But can’t help but wonder this, saints. You claim to have the power of magical healing, producing stuff from thin air and even changing your form to ones you please. So when you feel like you want some money, why don’t you produce that out of thin air too instead of running sex rackets and cheating people?
